A compound of X and Y has the empirical formula XY2. Its vapour density is equal to its empirical formula weight. Determine its molecular formula.

Molecular weight = 2 x Vapour density

= 2 x Empirical formula weight

(Given, Vapour density = empirical formula weight) 

Molecular Weight = Empirical formula weight x n

2 x Empirical formula weight = Empirical formula weight x n

n = 2

Molecular Formula = (Empirical Formula) x n

= (XY2)2

= X2Y4
