Directions: The below item consists of two statements, one labelled as the 'Statement (I)' and the other as 'Statement (II)'. Examine these two statements carefully and select the answers to these items using the codes given below:

Statement (I): All passive components can be fabricated in a single chip.

Statement (II): As opposed to discrete circuits where all components are separately inserted and connected, in an integrated circuit, they are simultaneously created on a chip of semiconductor material during manufacturing.

Codes:

1. Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is the correct explanation of Statement (I)
2. Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true but Statement (II) is NOT the correct explanation of Statement (I)
3. Statement (I) is true but Statement (II) is false
4. Statement (I) is false but Statement (II) is true

Correct Answer - Option 4 : Statement (I) is false but Statement (II) is true

Statement I:

  • As the fabrication process is used for the integration of active and passive components onto a single chip, the IC becomes a lot smaller.
  • R, L, and C are passive components. Among these, the inductor can’t be fabricated on the same IC with different passive components because of large size.
  • The limitation is simply that we can’t get much useful current handling capacity.
  • Integrating something like ferrite is difficult in an IC and air cores would have to operate at very high frequencies to work.

Hence, Statement I is false.

Statement II:

  • A discrete circuit is constructed of components which are manufactured separately.
  • Later, these components are connected by using conducting wires on a circuit board (or) printed circuit board.
  • Whereas in IC, all components are fabricated on the same chip and with the interconnections also.
