Correct Answer - Option 2 : carbon dioxide

Explanation:

Global Warming and CO2

  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an important trace gas in Earth's atmosphere.
  • It is an integral part of the carbon cycle, a biogeochemical cycle in which carbon is exchanged between the Earth's oceans, soil, rocks and the biosphere. COabsorbs and emits infrared radiation at wavelengths of 4.26 µm and 14.99 µm and consequently is a greenhouse gas that plays a significant role in influencing Earth's surface temperature through the greenhouse effect.
  • The increase has been attributed to human activity, particularly deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels.
  • This increase of CO2 and other long-lived greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere has produced the current episode of global warming.
  • Earth's sister planet Venus is a good example of what happens when there is too much carbon dioxide in the air.
  • Global warming is caused by the emission of greenhouse gases. 72% of the totally emitted greenhouse gases is CO2. Therefore, excessive release of CO2 is the main cause of global warming.
