When two surfaces are in contact with each other during motion, it requires more force even on a horizontal surface to move which is due to friction. But frictional force does not depend on ______

Correct Answer - Option 4 : Area of contact between two surfaces

Concept:

The law of limiting friction states that the force of friction always acts along such a direction so as to oppose the motion of the body relative to each other.

Limiting frictional force depends on the following factors:

  • It is directly proportional to normal force between the two surfaces
  • It opposes the motion between the surfaces
  • It depends upon the material of the two surfaces
  • It is independent of the area of contact
  • It is independent of the velocity of sliding
  • It depends on the nature of surfaces in contact. If the surface is rougher, then the frictional forces will be more.
