Statement (I): The coefficient of discharge for a mouthpiece is higher than that of an orifice.

Statement (II): The discharge through an orifice varies as H1/2 whereas the discharge through a mouthpiece varies as H2/3 (where H is the head causing the flow in both cases)
1. Both statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is the correct explanation of Statement (I)
2. Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true but statement (II) is not the correct explanation of Statement (I)
3. Statement (I) is true but Statement (II) is false
4. Statement (I) is false but Statement (II) is true

Correct Answer - Option 3 : Statement (I) is true but Statement (II) is false

Explanation:

  • The coefficient of discharge for mouthpiece for all practical purposes is taken as 0.855.
  • However, sometimes the loss of head reduces the coefficient of discharge by a small amount up to 0.82. The coefficient of discharge for orifice is about 0.60 to 0.62.
  • Hence, the coefficient of discharge for a mouthpiece is higher than that of an orifice.

Discharge for mouthpiece (Q)\( = {C_d}A\sqrt {2gH} \)

Discharge for orifice (Q) \(= {C_d}\frac{{{A_1}{A_2}\sqrt {2gH} }}{{\sqrt {A_1^2 - \;A_2^2} }}\)

Hence for both orifice and mouthpiece the discharge varies as H1/2.
