Consider the following materials:

(i) Quartz

(ii) Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate
(iii) Lithium sulfate

Arrange the above materials in decreasing order of their dielectric constant.

1. (i), (ii), (iii)
2. (ii), (iii), (i)

Correct Answer - Option 2 : (ii), (iii), (i)

The dielectric constant (k) of a material is the ratio of its permittivity ε to the permittivity of vacuum εo , so k = ε / εo.

The dielectric constant is therefore also known as the relative permittivity of the material.

Since the dielectric constant is just a ratio of two similar quantities, it is dimensionless

Material

Dielectric constant

Quartz 3.76
Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate 7.43
Lithium sulfate 5.81

Carbon

2.5-3.0

Silicon carbide

10

Silicon nitride

9.5

Gallium nitride

              11.2

Hence, option 2 is correct.
