Direction: It consists of two statements, one labelled as ‘Statement (I)’ and the others as ‘Statement (II)’. You are to examine these two statements carefully and select the answer using the codes given below:

Statement (I): A greenhouse gas is any gas in the atmosphere which absorbs and re-emits heat and thereby keeps the planet's atmosphere warmer than it otherwise would be.

Statement (II): In the Earth's atmosphere, water vapour is one of the main greenhouse gases.
1. Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) individually true and Statement (II) is the correct explanation of Statement (I)
2. Both statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true, but Statement (II) is not the correct explanation of Statement (I)
3. Statement (I) is true, but Statement (II) is false

Correct Answer - Option 2 : Both statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true, but Statement (II) is not the correct explanation of Statement (I)

Greenhouse effect:

  • It occurs due to the increase in the percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
  • It absorbs the solar rays and energy of the sun due to which the temperature on the earth increases and natures balance gets disturbed
  • Our vehicles and industries are continuously increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

Global Warming:

  • Increase in the average temperature of the earth surface due to the greenhouse effect is called global warming
  • It also refers to the increase in the average temperature of the air and sea at earth's surface

Green House Gases (GHG):

The major greenhouse gases are

  • Water vapor - causes about 36% - 70% of the greenhouse effect
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) which causes 9 - 26%
  • Methane (CH4) causes 4 - 9%
  • Ozone (O3)
  • Nitrous Oxide
  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)

Therefore, both statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true, but Statement (II) is not the correct explanation of Statement (I).
