Correct Answer - Option 3 : Statement (I) is true but Statement (II) is false

Concepts:

Mud Mortar:

  • Mud mortar is the cheapest type of mortar prepared with locally available ingredients and are used for brick masonry works, surfacing floors and plastering wall surfaces in low cost houses.
  • It is prepared by removing the top 150 to 200 mm layer of earth and then by wetting the clay nodules dug from the ground. Then these are allowed to mature for a day or two and the ingredients are then kneaded well and mixed thoroughly.
  • Sometimes fibrous material such as cow dung is added to mud mortar which prevents the shrinkage cracks. To improve resistance to rain water, the plastered surfaces of brick masonry are sometimes sprayed with bituminous material.
  • As a whole brick masonry laid with mud mortar is weak in strength. But in elemental level mud mortar enhances the strength of brick, increases frost resistance and thermal insulation as compared cement sand mortar.

Hence, statement I is correct and statement II is incorrect.
