Correct Answer - Option 4 : Rotor of a dc machine
  • Because of the restrictions imposed on the winding arrangement by the commutator, the mmf wave of a dc machine armature approximates a sawtooth waveform more nearly than the sine wave of AC machines
  • Considering narrow slots, mmf wave consists of a series of steps the height of each step equals the no of ampere-turns in a slot.
  • The peak value is along the magnetic axis of the armature, midway between the field poles.
  • This mmf wave can be represented approximately by the sawtooth wave. For a more realistic winding with a large number of armature slots per pole, the triangular distribution becomes a close approximation.

Note: Stator of a dc machine produces a trapezoidal mmf wave in the airgap.
