The correct answer is option 2, i.e. Both the statements are individually true and statement II is not the correct explanation of statement I.

Gandhi was the President of the All India Khilafat Committee and favoured the launching of satyagraha and non-cooperation for Khilafat issue. Hence, Statement I is correct.

  • The congress was not united in this form of political action.
  • Tilak opposed the alliance with Muslim leaders on the religious issue. According to him, Satyagraha was an instrument of politics. Hence, Statement II is correct. However, Statement II is not a correct explanation of Statement I.
    • He was also opposing the form of boycotting the councils.
  • Gandhi was able to get the approval of Congress,

  • Muslims demanded Khalifa’s control over Muslims sacred places with sufficient territories under his control.
  • In 1919, Khilafat committee was formed under the leadership of Ali brothers (Shaukat Ali and Muhammad Ali), Maulana Azad, Azmal Khan, etc. to force the British government to change its attitude towards Turkey.
