Directions: The critical reasoning question is based on a short argument, a set of arguments, or a plan of action. For each question, select the best answer of the choices given and explain why the chosen answer is the right fit.

During an ongoing conversation between Gagan and Saarth, Gagan expressed his feelings towards the controversy of Amrita Pritam’s writings. Gagan said, “Pritams’s work is too often evaluated and observed from a modern point of view and described as modern Punjabi writing”.

To this Saarth replied, “Amrita Pritam’s writing inspired the next generation of modernist Punjabi writers and poets.”

What could be the viewpoint of Saarth while replying to Gagan?

1. Amrita Pritam’s work is very controversial
2. Amrita Pritam was the pioneer of modern Punjabi writing
3. Amrita Pritam’s work helped develop modern Punjabi writing
4. Modern Punjabi writing does not owe as much to Amrita Pritam as many experts make it out to be

Best answer
Correct Answer - Option 3 : Amrita Pritam’s work helped develop modern Punjabi writing

Remember the dispute in the argument is whether Amrita Pritam is a modernist Punjabi writer or not. This means that options 1, 2 and 4 cannot be conclusively proven from the facts given (as the dispute is around the facts put forward by these options).

The statement of Saarth in the last line of the paragraph directly relates to the fact that Amrita has helped develop modern Punjabi writings by inspiring the next generation.

Option 3 is the correct choice as her influence on Punjabi writing has not been questioned.
Therefore, this was the viewpoint with which Saarth was replying to Gagan.
