  • Seydi Ali Reis (1498–1563) was a Navigator and an Ottoman admiral, he led the Ottoman fleet's left-wing at the naval battle of Preveza in 1538.
  • He was later promoted to the rank of Ottoman fleet admiral in the Indian Ocean, and as such encountered many occasions in 1554 with the Portuguese forces based in the Indian city of Goa.
  • Seydi Ali Reis wrote his famous books during that time, such as the Mir' at ül Memâlik (The Mirror of Countries, 1557).
  • He also published many poems, under the pseudonym Kâtib-i Rumî (Anatolian Bookman).
  • Rüstem Pasha pressed for Seydi Ali Reis to reappoint the Indian Ocean fleet's admiral in 1560, but Egypt's governor Sofu Hadım Ali Pasha prevented this move.
