Assertion (A): Architecturally 8086 μP is totally different from its predecessor 8085 μP but functionally it is downward compatible with 8085.

Reason (R): The segmented architecture was introduced in 8086 μP to keep compatibility with 8085 μp.

1. Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
2. Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)

Correct Answer - Option 1 : Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)

8086 μP is the next generation microprocessor. Architecturally 8086 μP is totally different from its predecessor 8085 μP but functionally it is downward compatible with 8085. It was designed by intel in 1976. (Assertion is correct)

Memory Segmentation in 8086 μP

  • Segmentation is the process in which the main memory is divided into different segments, each segment has its own address.
  • 8086 μP architecture is divided into 2 units:
  1. BIU ⇒ It has segmented Registers & IP
  2. EU ⇒ It has General, special purpose registers, ALU, Flag register (Reason is correct and explains the Assertion)
