Statement (I): The specific fuel consumption of a Cl engine is lower than that of an SI engine.

Statement (II): For the same power, a Cl engine is bigger in size than an SI engine.
1. Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is the correct explanation of Statement (I)
2. Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is NOT the correct explanation of Statement (I)

Correct Answer - Option 2 : Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are individually true and Statement (II) is NOT the correct explanation of Statement (I)

Explanation:

  • The specific fuel consumption of a Cl engine is lower than that of an SI engine because the calorific value of diesel fuel is slightly lower than the petrol fuel and also diesel fuel is denser than petrol and contains more energy by volume.
  • For the same power, a Cl engine is bigger in size than an SI engine because we need more compression ratio for diesel engines than a petrol engine.
  • So both statement is individually correct.
