  • The Janapadas were the realms, republics (ganapada) and kingdoms (saamarajya) on the Indian subcontinent.
  • It had developed in the Vedic period and got prominent during the Buddhist and Jainism periods.
  • The Buddhist canonical texts - Anguttara Nikaya, Digha Nikaya, Chulla-Niddesa, although with some differences between them, primarily refer to the following 16 mahajanapadas:
