Correct Answer - Option 3 : Butane

The correct answer is Butane.

  • LPG stands for liquefied petroleum gas.
  • Like all fossil fuels, it is a non-renewable source of energy.
  • It is extracted from crude oil and natural gas.
  • LPG is composed of hydrocarbons containing three or four carbon atoms.
  • The normal components of LPG thus, are propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10).
  • Small concentrations of other hydrocarbons may also be present.
  • Ethyl mercaptan is added to LPG to prevent the threats of fire.
  • Ethanethiol, commonly known as ethyl mercaptan and stench, is a clear liquid with a distinct odour.
  • LPG is naturally colourless, odourless and is also flammable.
  • Ethyl Mercaptan is a colourless or yellowish liquid or a gas with a pungent, garlic or skunk-like odour.
  • It is used as an additive to odourless gases like butane, propane, and petroleum to give them a warning odour.
