Consider the following statements:

I. In atmosphere, the percentage of nitrogen by mass is 78%.

II. Nitrogen is collected by upward displacement of water.

III. Nitrogen is chemically inert due to high dissociation energy.

1. Statement I and III are correct, statement II is wrong.
2. Statement I and II are correct, statement III is wrong.
3. Statement II and III are correct, statement I is wrong.

Correct Answer - Option 1 : Statement I and III are correct, statement II is wrong.

Concept:

Characteristics of Nitrogen

  • Nitrogen is inert, non-metallic, colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that occurs in the earth's atmosphere by 78.1 %.
  • It has an electronegativity of 3.04.
  • It has five electrons in its outer shell and is, therefore trivalent in most compounds.
  • Due to the high bond dissociation energy, nitrogen molecule is found to be chemically inert.
  • The density of nitrogen is 1.251 g/L at 0oC and specific gravity of 0.96737, which makes nitrogen slightly lighter than air.
  • Nitrogen is generally collected by downward displacement of water because N2 is insoluble in water.

Explanation:

From the given characteristics of nitrogen, the correct statements are given below

I. In the atmosphere, the percentage of nitrogen by mass is 78%.

III. Nitrogen is chemically inert due to high dissociation energy.

Since nitrogen is generally collected by downward displacement of water because N2 is insoluble in water, the II statement is wrong.

So, the correct answer is Statement I and III are correct, statement II is wrong.
