Correct Answer - Option 2 : Stronger in compression but weaker in tension

Explanation:

Cast iron is a ferrous metal, an alloy of iron with 2 to 4.5% carbon and 3.5% silicon.

  • Compared to tensile strength cast iron is strong in compressive strength.
  • This is because cast iron is having 2 to 4% carbon in it which makes it brittle in nature and all brittle materials are comparatively stronger in compression than in tension.
  • Ductile materials are stronger in tension and brittle material are stronger in compression.
