(Location)

Harappa

  • Harappa is situated on the bank of river Ravi in Sahiwal district, Punjab(Pakistan).
  • It was the first city excavated in the year 1921 by Dayaram Sahani.
  • Important findings- Sandstone statues, Granaries,Bullock Carts etc.
  • The whole civilization is named after Harappa because it was the first site that was excavated.

Mohenjodaro

  • Mohenjodaro is situated on the bank of the Indus (or Sind) river.
  • It was discovered in 1922 by R. D. Banerji, an officer of the Archaeological Survey of India.
  • It was the largest site of the Indus Valley Civilization, designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980.
  • It was contemporary of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Crete, and Norte Chico civilizations.
  • Mohenjodaro means “Mound of the Dead Men” in the Sindhi language.

Kalibangan

  • Kalibangan is located on the bank of river Ghaghhar in Hanumangarh District.
  • The site Kalibangan - literally means 'black bangles'.
  • It derives its name for the dense distribution of the fragments of black bangles which were found at the surface of its mounds. The citadel complex is roughly a parallelogram.
  • The most important discovery of Kalibangan is a ploughed field.
  • Bones of the camel have been found at Kalibangan. 
  • Cylindrical seal of Mesopotamia is found here.
  • Evidence regarding cooking practices.
  • The wheat grains have been discovered at the site.

Lothal

  • Lothal is located between the Bhogavo and Sabarmati rivers near the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat. 
  • It was situated near areas where raw materials such as semi-precious stones were easily available.
  • This was an important centre for making objects out of stone, shell, and metal.
  • There was also a storehouse in the city.
  • A building that was found there was probably a workshop for making beads: pieces of stone, half-made beads, tools for bead making, and finished beads have all been found here.
  • The word Lothal, like Mohenjo-Daro, means the mound of the dead.
  • The 4,500-year-old city was mathematically planned. It had a grid pattern with proper streets crossing at right angles and drainage systems.
