Environmental Studies or EVS is the study of the environment that refers to the surroundings in which we live. The components of the environment comprise everything that supports the survival of humans directly or indirectly.

Assumptions of EVS classroom:

  • Children learn to think critically and to analyze their own experiences.
  • At the same time, children also grow up to be sensitive to others’ viewpoints and beliefs.
  • They learn to be different and appreciate the diversity of thoughts, experiences, people, food, languages, environment, and above all socio-cultural traditions, practices, and beliefs.
  • Such experiences help children develop ‘group/social skills. These provide them some of the earliest experiences of dealing in a ‘group’, working with group members—learning to ‘listen’ to them and ‘talk’ to them.
  • It shows that they learn mostly by participation that can be through participative and discussion-based methods of learning EVS.
  • Such types of methods provide opportunities for children for expressing themselves and to get indulged in the learning wholeheartedly.
  • Children with such experiences in their early years of life, grow up to be good citizens of a democratic society.

Hence, taking into consideration the above points, the most suitable pedagogical method for an EVS class is based on participative and discussion-based, as children learn by discussion and sharing things they observe in the environment.
