  • “Untouchable” was the first novel written by Mulk Raj Anand published in 1935 followed by “Coolie” (1936) and “Two Leaves and a Bud” (1937).

  • Mulk Raj Anand (1905 – 2004) along with R. K. Narayan (1906 – 2001), Ahmad Ali (1910 -1994), and Raja Rao (1908 – 2006) is considered one of the pioneers of Indo-Anglian fiction.
  • He was known for his depiction of the lives of the poorer castes in traditional Indian society and was one of the first India-based writers in English to gain an international readership. 
  • He was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan.
