  • The first compilation of Jain religious text i.e., 12 Angas, took place at the Second Jaina Council held at Vallabhi in the 5th century AD by Shwetambars.
  • The Twelve Angas (limbs) are as follows:
    • Ayaramga
    • Suyagada
    • Thanamga
    • Samavayamgav
    • Viyaha- pannatti
    • Naya- dhamma-kahao
    • Uvasaga- dasao
    • Anuttarovavaiya- dasao
    • Anuttaraupaptikadasah
    • Panha- vagarana
    • Vivaga- suya

  • Vardhaman Mahavira, born in 540 B.C. in a village called Kundagram near Vaishali was the 24th Tirthankara.
  • By 300 CE, Jainism became to be divided into two sects:
    • Digambara (sky-clad) - Monks belonging to this sect do not wear any clothes.
    • Shwetambara (white-clad) - Monks of this sect wear only white robes.
  • The Triratna (three gems) of the Jaina doctrine consists of 
    • Right faith 
    • Right knowledge
    • Right conduct

 

  • The word 'Jaina' means follower of 'Jina', meaning victor, a person who has attained infinite knowledge and teachers others how to attain moksha.
  • Tirthankar means 'ford builder' i.e., one who builds ford that helps people across the ocean of suffering.
  • The First Jaina Council was in 3rd Century B.C. at Pataliputra.
  • The Second Jaina Council was held at Vallabhi in the 5th century A.D.
