Correct Answer - Option 4 : Kingdom of Awadh

The correct answer is Kingdom of Awadh.

  • The Kingdom of Awadh was called "a cherry" by Governor-General Lord Dalhousie.
    • To be precise, in 1851, Governor-General Lord Dalhousie described the kingdom of Oudh as "a cherry that will one day fall in our mouths".
    • Five years later, in 1856, the state was formally annexed to the British Empire.
    • A subsidiary alliance had already been imposed on Oudh in 1801.
    • The Nawab had to disband its military power and according to the alliance, the British had to allow their troops to be stationed within the state.
    • The Nawabs became increasingly dependent on the British for maintaining law and order within the state.
    • The British felt that the soil of Awadh was good for the production of indigo and cotton.
    • The acquisition of Awadh in 1856 was expected to complete the process of territorial merger.
