Correct Answer - Option 2 : 1 and 2 only

The correct answer is 1 and 2 only.

  • A type of earthworm called Redworm is used for composting.
  • The method of preparing compost with the help of redworms is called vermicomposting. Hence, statement 1 is correct.
  • Redworms do not have teeth. They have a structure called ‘gizzard’, which helps them in grinding their food. Hence, statement 2 is correct.
  • Powdered eggshells or seashells could be mixed with the wastes.
  • This would help redworms in grinding their food.
  • A redworm can eat food equal to its own weight, in a day.
  • Redworms do not survive in very hot or very cold surroundings. They also need moisture around them. Hence statements 3 is incorrect.

  • Vermicomposting is a process in which earthworms are used to convert organic materials into humus-like material known as vermicompost.
    • Vermicomposting is a quick, efficient way to convert kitchen scraps into a rich soil amendment using earthworms.
  • A number of researchers throughout the world have found that the nutrient profile in vermicompost is generally higher than traditional compost.
  • In fact, vermicompost can enhance soil fertility physically, chemically and biologically; hence considered one of the effective ways of organic farming.
    • Physically, vermicompost-treated soil has better aeration, porosity, bulk density and water retention.
  • Vermicompost worms break down organic matter, such as kitchen scraps, into waste products called castings.
    • Although castings may be a waste to the worms, they are a rich treasure for gardeners.
  • Vermicompost is richer in essential plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium than traditional compost.
  • It also contains microbes that help plants grow.
