  • Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) is an Indian Labour law and social security measure that aims to guarantee the Right to work.
    • The act was passed on August 23, 2005. (under the prime ministership of Manmohan Singh).
    • The act was first proposed in 1991 by PV.Narasimha Rao.
    • It was Quoted as a "Stellar Example of Rural Development" in World Development Report 2014.
    • The act aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
    • The NDA Government has decided to provide 150 days in rain-hit areas.
      • Employment is provided within 5km of an applicant's residence.
      • If work is not provided within 15 days of applying, applicants are entitled to an unemployment allowance.
      • The registration process involves an application to the Gram Panchayat and the issue of Job cards.
      • MNREGA is implemented mainly by Gram Panchayats.

  •  The act aims to follow Directive Principles of State Policy enunciated in Part 4 of the Constitution of India.
    • Article 41 directs the state to secure all the citizens Right to Work.
