Correct Answer - Option 1 : Civil Disobedience Movement

The correct answer is the Civil Disobedience Movement.

  • Civil Disobedience Movement:
    • The movement started with the breaking of the Salt law at Dandi in March 1930.
    • The Dandi March started from Gandhiji's ashram in Sabarmati to the Gujarati coastal town of Dandi.
    • The movement was called off in the year 1931, and Gandhiji decided to enter into the Gandhi-Irwin Pact.
    • The terms of the Gandhi-Irwin Pact included calling off of the movement, releasing of all prisoners, and manufacturing salt along the coast.
    • The failure of the Second Round Table and the new repression cycle adopted by the British led to the relaunching of the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1932.
    • When Gandhiji returned to India, Nehru, and Ghaffar Khan both were in jail, Congress was declared illegal.
    • Thus, Gandhiji decided to relaunch the movement in 1932. But, it lost its momentum in 1934.

  • The Salt March was notable for at least three reasons.
    • It was this event that first brought Mahatma Gandhi to world attention.
      • The march was widely covered by the European and American press.
    • It was the first nationalist activity in which women participated in large numbers.
      • Kamaladevi was herself one of the numerous women who courted arrest by breaking the salt or liquor laws.
      •  The socialist activist Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay had persuaded Gandhiji not to restrict the protests to men alone
    • And perhaps most significant, it was the Salt March which forced upon the British the realization that their Raj would not last forever, and that they would have to devolve some power to the Indians.
