  • Lucknow Pact of the Indian National congress happened in 1916 and was a treaty between Indian National Congress and Muslim League.
  • The Lucknow Pact put forward common political demands before the government including the demand for self-government for India after the World War.
  • The pact was important in that it enhanced the League’s power in Indian politics and established communalism as an unavoidable part of Indian politics.
  • The Lucknow Pact gave the impression of Hindu-Muslim unity in the national political scene. But it increased communalism in India.

 

  • Key Features of the Lucknow Pact:
    • There shall be self-government in India.
    • Muslims should be given 1/3rd representation in the Central government.
    • There should be separate electorates for all the communities until they ask for a joint electorate.
    • The number of members of the Central Legislative Council should be increased to 150. The term of CLC should be 5 years.
    • The Indian Council must be abolished.
