Concept-

  • Natural vegetation refers to a plant community that has been left undisturbed over a long time, so as to allow its individual species to adjust themselves to climate and soil conditions as fully as possible.
  • Due to varied climatic conditions, India has a wide range of natural vegetation.
  • The vegetation of India can be divided into five types –
    • Tropical Evergreen Rain Forests,
    • Deciduous or Monsoon Type of Forests,
    • Dry Deciduous Forests and Scrubs,
    • Semi Desert and Desert Vegetation,
    • Tidal or Mangrove Forests.

The main vegetational types found on the West coast of India evergreen, alpine, deciduous, and grasslands.

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands, parts of North-Eastern states, and a narrow strip of the Western slope of the Western Ghats are home to tropical rain forests. 
  • Tropical deciduous forests are found in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and in parts of Maharashtra.
  • Thorny bushes are found in the states of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, the Eastern slopes of Western Ghats, and Gujarat.
  • Mangrove forests are found mainly in Sunderbans in West Bengal and in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
