Given:

Average runs of 11 matches = 73

Reduction in average runs after playing twelfth match = 5

Calculation:

Let the runs scored by the batsman in the twelfth match be R.

According to the question, 

Average runs of 11 matches = 73 

⇒ (Total runs in 11 matches)/(Number of matches) = 73

⇒ (Total runs in 11 matches)/11 = 73

⇒ Total runs in 11 matches = 73 × 11 

⇒ Total runs in 11 matches = 803 runs

Again, According to the question,

Average runs of 12 matches = (73 - 5)

⇒ (Total runs in 12 matches)/(Number of matches) = 68

⇒ (Total runs in 11 matches + Runs of twelfth match)/12 = 68

⇒ 803 + R = 68 × 12 

⇒ R = 816 - 803

⇒ R = 13 runs

∴ The runs scored by the batsman in the twelfth match are 13 runs.
