Correct Answer - Option 1 : Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

Assertion (A): The partition of India in 1947 provided an impetus for town planning activities in the country.

  • The working committee of the Congress Party passed a comprehensive resolution on the planned economy for the country and the appointment of the Planning Commission.
  • The resolution states “ The need for a comprehensive plan has become a matter of compelling urgency in India now owing to the ravages of Second World War and the economic and political consequences of the partition of the country which followed in the wake of achievement of freedom and steady worsening of the economic situation in India and the World. ”
  • Thus the National Planning Commission was established on 15th March 1950.
  • The Planning Commission was set up by a Resolution of the Government of India in March 1950.

Hence, the assertion is correct.

Reason (R): Resettlement of displaced persons and providing them employment opportunities created a big opportunity before the town planners to construct new towns and make provision of amenities and facilities in existing towns especially in north Indian states.

  • In India, the urban population living amid pre-independence years was 13.9 percent in 1941, which rose to 17.3 percent in 1951.
  • Before freedom, about 15 percent of individuals were living in towns and now their number had turned out to be simply doubled.
  • The purposes behind an expansion in the urban population are many, yet the primary reason has been a nonstop stream of the provincial populace to urban zones.
  • Urban advancement accomplishments were wanted through arranging and in this way, autonomous India set out on a national program of general improvement.
  • In this undertaking, ‘making Plans for urban advancement’ involved a prime place.

Hence, the reason is also true and correctly explaining the assertion.
