Correct Answer - Option 4 : Folded mountain

The correct answer is Folded mountain.

  • Himalayan mountain range
    • The Himalayas are a type of young fold mountains.
      • Fold mountains are formed due to the collision of tectonic plates.
    • When two tectonic plates collide they get compressed resulting in the upliftment of Earth's crust.
    • Young because the Himalayas are still in the process of formation.
    • Includes the Himalayas, Purvanchal, and their extensions Arakan Yoma (Myanmar) and Andaman and Nicobar Islands (but we will consider these as islands only).
    • It is the youngest and highly unstable landmass of India. [Continent – Continent Convergence]
    • Tectonic movements are very common.

  • Residual mountains are those mountains that have been eroded by the agents of degradation such as winds, rain, frost, and running water.
    • The hard rocks that are left behind are called residual mountains.
    • The Sierras of central Spain and Mesas of the USA are some examples of residual mountains.
  • Fractal mountain
    • Fractal mountains are generated by taking an equilateral triangle and recursively subdividing it into smaller and smaller triangles.
    • As each triangle is subdivided, each new midpoint generated is raised or lowered by a random amount.
  • A volcanic mountain starts out as a simple crack in the Earth called a volcanic vent.
    • Magma erupts out of the ground as lava flows, clouds of ash, and explosions of rock.
    • This material falls back to Earth around the vent and piles up around it.
    • Overtime (and sometimes quite quickly) a volcanic mountain builds up, with the familiar cone shape.
