According to question:

[(x - 39) × 2] + 16 = 98

⇒ [(x - 39) × 2] = 98 - 16

⇒ [(x - 39) × 2] = 82

⇒ [(x - 39) = 82/2

⇒ (x - 39) = 41

⇒ x = 41 + 39 

⇒ x = 80

∴ 80 is the number that Josh is thinking.
