Correct Answer - Option 3 : 9

Given:

On selling 45 pens for Rs 40, a man loses by 20%

Formula Used:

[N1 × (100 ± Profit/loss%)] / R1 = [N2 × (100 ± Profit/loss%)] / R2

Where, N = no. of articles, R = rate of articles

Calculation:

Putting values,

[45 × 80]/40 = [N2 × 120]/12

⇒ 90 = N2 × 10

⇒ N2 = 9

∴ He should sell 9 pens for Rs. 12 if he wishes to make a profit of 20%.
