Correct Answer - Option 2 : Leo Tolstoy

“All our Palaces, all our theatres, all these riches of ours. we owe to the effort of these same hungry People" these lines are written by Leo Tolstoy.

Leo Tolstoy:

  • Tolstoy is mainly known for his two books, War and Peace and Anna Karenina which depict realistic Russian life.
  • Russia was facing many of the same problems that Britain and other countries had faced in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution. The gap between rich and poor was enormous. In one of these books, it is mentioned that As Leo Tolstoy wrote: All our palaces, all our theaters, all these riches of ours, we owe to the effort of these same hungry people who make these things.
  • Tolstoy discusses the system of division of labour and said that a section of society is in poverty, while another enjoys the fruits of others in the name of science and art. He said, ‘Science and art are beautiful things, but just because they are beautiful they should not be spoilt by joining depravity to them, that is freeing oneself from a man’s obligation to support his own and other people’s lives by labour’.
  • He was an advocate of pacifism. In one of his later works, The Kingdom of God is Within You, Tolstoy provides a detailed history, account and defence of pacifism.
  • In his book, The End of Faith, Sam Harris argues that pacifism is a fallacy, combining hesitance with cowardice, in that the social context in which a pacifist can protest was created by the actions of direct activists.
