Correct Answer - Option 4 : the Communal Award
  • On September 16, 1932, in his cell at Yerwada Jail in Pune, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi begins a hunger strike in protest of the British government’s decision to separate India’s electoral system by caste. (i.e. against the Communal Award of Ramsay Mac Donald.)
  • British prime minister Ramsay MacDonald on 16 August 1932 introduced the communal reward.
  • The purpose of the award was to grant separate electorates in British India for the Lower Caste, Buddhists, Sikhs, Muslims, Indian Christians, Anglo-Indians, and Untouchables.
  • Poona pact was signed by  Ambedkar on behalf of the lower classes and Madan Mohan Malviya on behalf of the Upper Caste Hindus to end the protest of Gandhi against the communal award.
