Correct Answer - Option 1 : mass number of the atom

Explanation:

Nucleons

  • A nucleon can be either a proton or a neutron.
  • The total number of protons and neutrons (often referred to as nucleons) in an atomic nucleus is known as the mass number (A).
  • For each isotope of a chemical element, the mass number is different.
    • Isotopes of the same element are identified by differences in their mass numbers, which differ only in the number of neutrons they contain.
  • This is distinct from the atomic number (Z), which refers to the number of protons in a nucleus and hence uniquely identifies an element
  • The mass number of an atom is thus, defined as the sum total of protons and neutrons.
    • As protons and neutrons are also referred to as nucleons, their sum defining the mas number is hence called the nucleon number.
  • In an atomic nucleus, nucleons thus have a net positive charge.
  • Hence, the correct answer to the question is - mass number of the atom.

PROTON NEUTRON ELECTRON
Positively charged particles Neutral particles i.e. no charge is present on them Negatively charged particles.
Present in the nucleus of the atom  Present in the nucleus of the atom present in the outer shell, orbiting around the nucleus of the atom.
More massive than electrons More massive than electrons Quite lighter particles
