Correct Answer - Option 2 : Satara

The correct answer is Satara.

  • The first victim of Lard Dalhousie's policy of Doctrine of Lapse was Satara.
  • Appasaheb was the king of Satara, a few years before his death, without telling the East India Company, adopted a son.
  • After his death Lord Dalhousie merged it into the British Empire, giving it the status of a dependent kingdom.
  • It was merged in the year 1848.

  • The Doctrine of lapse was actually a part of the British imperialist policy, according to which the British wanted to impose their rule over more and more states in the country.
  • This policy was initiated by Lord Dalhousie, who was the Governor-General of India.
    • His tenure was from 1848 to 1856.
  • Although the Court of Directors of the East India Company laid the foundation of this policy in 1834, long before Dalhousie's tenure, Dalhousie's efficient work made it more effective.
  • Key points of the Doctrine of lapse:
    • If a state has no successor, then merge it with the British Empire.
    • Prohibition on the adoption of children for succession.
    • Restrictions on grant of degrees and pensions to children adopted by rulers.
    • The adopted child inherits only the personal property of the ruler.
    • End of titles and pensions.
  • States affected by the policy:
    • Satara - 1848
    • Jaipur and Sambalpur - 1849
    • Baghat - 1850
    • Udaipur - 1852
    • Jhansi - 1853
    • Nagpur - 1854
    • Karoli - 1855
    • Awadh - 1856

  • Politically, the implementation of this policy had a great impact, but at the same time, it also harmed social and religious conditions.
  • The sudden change of power in various states created anger among the common Indians against the Britishers.
  • The doctrine of Lapse was one of the reasons for the Revolution of 1857.
