  • The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly of India was held on 9 December 1946 at the Constitutional Hall, New Delhi.
    • Dr. Satchidanand Sinha was the first president of the Constituent Assembly.
    • The constitution-making body was elected by the Provincial Legislative Assembly consisting of 389 members, 93 from princely states, and 296 from British India.
    • In the first meeting, the Assembly adopted an 'Objectives Resolution' which later became the Preamble to the Constitution.
    • It was passed by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949.
    • The Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950 which became the Republic Day of India.
    • The members were to be indirectly elected by the members of the provincial assemblies, which themselves were elected on limited suffrage.
    • Elections to the Constituent Assembly were held from July–August 1946 for the 296 seats allocated to the British Indian Provinces.
    • The Indian National Congress won 208 seats, the Muslim League won 73 seats.

  • In 1934M N Roy first proposed the idea of a constituent assembly. Under the Cabinet Mission plan of 1946, elections were held for the formation of the constituent assembly.
  • Drafting Committee:
    • The Drafting Committee had seven members:
      • Alladi Krishnaswami Ayyar, N. Gopalaswami, B.R. Ambedkar, K.M Munshi, Mohammad Saadulla, B.L. Mitter, and D.P. Khaitan.
    • At its first meeting on 30th August 1947, the Drafting Committee elected B.R Ambedkar as its Chairman.
