Correct Answer - Option 5 : x = y or relation between x and y can not be established.

Given:

I. 5x2 + 17x - 12 = 0

II. 3y2 - 4y - 39 = 0

Calculation:

From I,

5x2 + 17x - 12 = 0

⇒ 5x2 + 20x - 3x - 12 = 0

⇒ 5x(x + 4) - 3(x + 4) = 0

⇒ (x + 4)(5x - 3) = 0

Taking,

⇒ (x + 4) = 0 or (5x - 3) = 0

⇒ x = -4 or (3/5)

From II,

3y2 - 4y - 39 = 0

⇒ 3y2 - 13y + 9y - 39 = 0

⇒ y(3y - 13) + 3(3y - 13) = 0

⇒ (3y - 13)(y + 3) = 0

Taking,

⇒ (3y - 13) = 0 or (y + 3) = 0

⇒ y = (13/3) or -3

Comparison between x and y (via Tabulation):

Value of x

Value of y

Relation

-4

13/3

x < y

-4

-3

x < y

3/5

13/3

x < y

3/5

-3

x > y

∴ x = y or relation between x and y can not be established.
