  • The harbinger of good and bad news for generations of Indian people, the telegram service of India Post, was closed forever in 2013.
  • It was one of the fastest means of communication for millions of people of that time.
  • It was started in 1850 on an experimental basis between Kolkata and Diamond Harbour.
  • In 1854, the service was made available to the public.
  • The telegram service was administered by the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 which was extended to the whole of India.

  • Postal Life Insurance:
    • Postal Life Insurance was launched in February 1884 as a welfare/insurance scheme for postal employees.
    • It is the oldest Life insurer in this country.
    • It has now been extended to various Government, Government aided, PSUs, autonomous, etc departments. 
  • Inland letter:
