Correct Answer - Option 2 : Ozone

The correct answer is the O3 layer.

  • Supersonic jet causes pollution by thinning of the O3 layer.

  • Aircraft produce water, in exhaust gases.
  • Gases coming our from these jets cause the depletion of the ozone layer.
  • The ozone layer forms the upper atmosphere, also known as the ozonosphere.
  • The ozone molecules shield and protect our planet from harmful solar radiation.
  • All the commercial flights are confined to the troposphere, but high-level supersonic aircraft inject pollutants into the stratosphere, which leads to the thinning of the ozone layer.
  • Ozone (O3) is the allotrope of Oxygen
  • COis carbon dioxide, while SO2 is sulphur dioxide.

  • September 16 is celebrated as World Ozone Day.
  • Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer
    • It is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer from Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
  • Ozone Layer Depletion:
    • The ozone layer is the thin shield high up in the sky that stops ultra-violet rays from reaching the earth. As a result of human activities, chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) were released into the atmosphere, which contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer.
