Correct Answer - Option 2 : F- < O2< N3-

The correct answer is F- < O2- < N3-.

  • The correct order of radii is F- < O2- < N3-.
  • The size of isoelectronic species depends on the nuclear charge.
  • As the nuclear attraction increases the electrons are strongly bound to the nucleus.
  • F-, O2-, N3- all have the same no. of e- but as atomic number increase ( F < O < N ) nuclear charge also increases.
  • Now, as compared to O, F has more ratio of nuclear charge per electron.
  • Among the isoelectronic species, the size increases as the negative charge increases.
  • So, the nuclear charge per electron increases, and they are strongly bound to the nucleus, decreasing the size.

  • Atomic radius is determined as the distance between the nuclei of two identical atoms bonded together.
  • The atomic radius of atoms generally decreases from left to right across a period.
  • The atomic radius of atoms generally increases from top to bottom within a group.
