Correct Answer - Option 4 : Increases friction

The correct answer is to increase friction.

  • The tires of vehicles have treads to increase the friction between the tire and the road and prevent skidding.
  • Tread voids provide the tire with traction by enabling the tread blocks to move and flex as the tires grip the road.
  • They also allow the water to escape when roadways are wet.

  • The opposing force that comes into play when two bodies come in contact with each other is called Friction.
  • There are four types of friction:
    • Static friction
    • Sliding friction
    • Rolling friction
    • Fluid friction
  • Static friction is defined as the frictional force that acts between the surfaces when they are at rest concerning each other.
    • Example - Creating heat by rubbing both hands together.
  • Sliding friction is defined as the resistance that is created between any two objects when they are sliding against each other.
    • Example - Sliding of the block across the floor.
  • Rolling friction is defined as the force which resists the motion of a ball or wheel and is the weakest type of friction.
    • Example - Wheels of the moving vehicles.
  • Fluid friction is defined as the friction that exists between the layers of the fluid when they are moving relative to each other.
    • Example - The flow of ink in pens.
