  • The five-kingdom system proposed by R.H. Whittaker.
  • The kingdom defined by him was named- Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia.
  • Kingdom Animalia is divided into sub-groups which is known as Phylum.
  • There are 11 phyla in the kingdom Animalia.
    • Porifera, Coelenterata, Ctenophora, Platyhelminthes, Aschelminthes, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata, Hemichordata, Chordata.
  • Phylum Porifera:
    • All animals of this group are found in water and bear pores in the body. 
    • These are multicellular animals but cells do not make regular tissues.
    • Numerous pores are known as Ostia found on the body wall. Hence, they are called sponges.
    • Skeleton is made up of minute calcareous or silicon spicules.
    • Examples: Sycon, Sponge, etc.

  • The animals belonging to the phylum Mollusca have soft-bodies, triploblastic and bilaterally symmetrical and coelomate.
    • They are sluggish invertebrates, with a thin fleshy envelope or mantle covering the visceral organs.
    • These organisms are found in the terrestrial as well as in deep seas.
  • Cnidarian, also called coelenterate, any member of the phylum Cnidaria (Coelenterata), a group made up of more than 9,000 living species.
    • Mostly marine animals, the cnidarians include the corals, hydras, jellyfish, Portuguese men-of-war, sea anemones, sea pens, sea whips, and sea fans.
  • The organisms belonging to the phylum Echinodermata are exclusively marine.
    • These are multicellular organisms with well-developed organ systems.
    • All the animals belonging to this phylum share the same characteristics features.
    • They are colorful organisms with unique shapes.
    • They are ecologically and geologically very important.
