  • The movement was started in 1973 at Reni village in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal region in Uttarakhand, then a part of Uttar Pradesh
  • The Chipko Movement was launched by Chandi Prasad Bhatt and Sunder Lal Bahuguna against large-scale cutting of trees by timber contractors in the Uttarakhand hills.
  • Sunder Lal Bahuguna has spent a large portion of his life fighting for the preservation of forests in the Himalayas. 
  • Local hill women from villages were organized and made aware of the ecological threats in the hills. They actively participated in the campaign.
