  • 73rd Constitutional amendments provided reservation to women in Panchayats.

  • The 73rd Amendment Act, 1992 has added a new part IX consisting of 16 Articles (Article 243 to 243-O) and the 11th Schedule to the Constitution.
  • The 73rd Amendment envisages the Gram Sabha as the foundation of the Panchayat Raj System to perform functions and powers entrusted to it by the State Legislatures.
  • It provides for a 3-tier Panchayat system, which would be constituted in every state at the village level, intermediate level, and district level.
  • The Constitutional Amendment was to ensure that 50% of total seats filled by direct elections in every panchayat be reserved for women.
