  • The Ramosis were the hilly tribes of the Western Ghats.
  • The Ramosis served in the lower ranks of the Maratha army and police, revolted in Satara in 1822, under the leadership of Chittur Singh in protest against the heavy assessment of land revenue and the harsh methods of its collection.
  • They resented British rule and the new pattern of administration.
  • In 1822, the Ramos has plundered the regions around Satara and attacked the forts.
  • In 1825-26, they again rose up in rebellion under the banner of Umaji on account of acute famine and scarcity in Pune, and the area remained disturbed till 1829 over the deposition and banishment of Raja Pratap Singh of Satara in September 1839
