  • The registered Manufacturing sector recorded the highest growth during 2005-06 to 2014-15.
  • The 10th Bihar Economic Survey Report- 2015-16 (ESR) has termed the growth performance of the Bihar economy as “steady” in the recent decade. 
  • However, it mentioned the growth rate of GSDP was slightly lower at 9.89 per cent in the immediate past (2010-11 to 2014-15).
  • The state economy has grown annually at 10.05 per cent during the period 2005-06 to 2014-15 and this is the highest among all major Indian states.
  • During the period 2005-06 to 2014-15, the sectors which recorded more than 15 per cent growth rates are- registered manufacturing (19.31 per cent), construction (16.58 per cent), Banking and Insurance (17.70 per cent), and transport/storage/communication (15.08 per cent).

  • The agriculture sector in Bihar:
    • Bihar is one of the strongest agricultural states.
    • The percentage of the population employed in agricultural production in Bihar is around 80%, which is much higher than the national average.
    • It is the fourth-largest producer of vegetables and the eighth largest producers of fruits in India.
    • Sugarcane is grown in approximately 6 per cent of the total area under cultivation in Bihar.
    • Sugarcane production in the state for 2018-19 (P) stood at 182.85 lakh MT.
    • During the sugar season 2019-20, 11 sugar mills were operating in the state of Bihar.
    • During 2019-20, 220.50 lakh MT of sugar is estimated to be produced in Bihar.
  • Transport Sector in Bihar:
    • The government is working on the expressway from the Purvanchal border through Bihar to Jharkhand and has also expanded the highway from Hajipur to Muzaffarpur from a two-lane to a four-lane highway.
    • The central government-funded north-east corridor expressway will run through the northern part of the state making the north better connected with the rest of India.
    • The state now spends (2007–2008) Rs 2,222.08 crore on roads, compared with Rs 51.2 crore between 2003 and 2004.
    • In September 2008, a $420 million (USD) loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) was provided to the government to improve nine state highways.
    • The loan would be used to convert nine state highways into double-lane roads covering a total stretch of 820 kilometres (510 mi).
    • The governments aim is to convert these roads into double-lane traffic corridors as per international standards and bids have been invited for the conversion of these roads in accordance with international bidding procedures.
  • Banking Sector in Bihar:
    • In the fiscal year 2019, out of approximately 145 thousand scheduled commercial bank offices across India, about 6,917 offices were in the state of Bihar.
    • Scheduled commercial banks in India include the public sector banks, private sector banks, regional rural banks as well as the private sector foreign banks under its gamut.
    • While the country has one bank branch with a population of 11,000, the average in Bihar is a population of 16,000.
    • Around 9.5 lakh SHGs under the Jeevika have already been formed in the state.
