Correct Answer - Option 4 : Potassium iodide

The correct answer is Potassium iodide.

  • Iodised salt:
    • Iodised salt is table salt mixed with a trivial amount of various salts of the element iodine.
    • The ingestion of iodine inhibits iodine deficiency.
    • Worldwide, iodine deficiency affects about two billion people and is the salient preventable cause of intellectual and developmental disabilities.
    • Deficiency also causes thyroid gland issues, including "endemic goitre".
    • In many countries, iodine deficiency is a primary public health problem that can be cheaply addressed by purposely adding small amounts of iodine to the sodium chloride salt.
  • Potassium iodide:
    • Potassium iodide is a salt of stable (not radioactive) iodine that can help block radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid gland, thus protecting this gland from radiation injury.
    • The thyroid gland is the part of the body that is most sensitive to radioactive iodine.
    • KI (potassium iodide) does not keep radioactive iodine from entering the body and cannot reverse the health effects caused by radioactive iodine once the thyroid is damaged.
    • KI (potassium iodide) only protects the thyroid, not other parts of the body, from radioactive iodine.

  • Iodine:
    • Iodine (I), chemical element, a member of the halogen elements, or Group 17 (Group VIIa) of the periodic table.
    • Iodine is never found in nature uncombined, and it is not concentrated sufficiently to form independent minerals.
    • It is present in seawater, but sparingly, as the iodide ion, I-, to the extent of approximately 50 mg per metric ton (0.0016 ounces per ton) of seawater.
    • It is also formed in seaweeds, oysters, and cod livers.
    • Sodium iodate (NaIO3) is contained in crude Chile saltpetre (sodium nitrate, NaNO3).
    • The human body contains iodine in the compound thyroxine, which is produced in the thyroid gland.
  • Calcium iodide:
    • Calcium iodide is an inorganic compound that is made of calcium and iodine.
    • It has the chemical formula CaI2.
    • Calcium iodide can be formed using either calcium oxide, calcium carbonate or calcium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid.
    • Calcium iodide is used in medicines.
    • It is used in photography.
  • Magnesium iodide:
    • Magnesium Iodide formula, also known as Diiodomagnesium formula is discussed in this article.
    • This chemical compound has various hydrates which are typical ionic halides and do not dissolve in water.
    • The molecular or chemical formula of Magnesium Iodide is MgI2 (anhydrous).
    • Diiodomagnesium is a crystalline solid white in colour and has no smell.
    • It can be synthesized by using magnesium oxide, magnesium carbonate, and magnesium hydroxide and treating them with hydroiodic acid.
    • It is widely used to produce organic synthesis compounds.
