  • Sir Michael O’Dwyer was shot dead on 13th March 1940 in London by Udham Singh.
  • Udham Singh:
    • Udham Singh was an Indian agitational belonging to the Ghadar Party, best known for his assassination in London of Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab in India, on 13 March 1940. 
    • The assassination was done in vengeance for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919, for which O'Dwyer was responsible.
    • Singh was afterwards tried and convicted of murder and hanged in July 1940.
    • While in lockup, he used the name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad, which represents the three major religions of Punjab and his anti-colonial sentiment.
    • Udham Singh is a well-known figure of the Indian independence struggle.
    • He is also referred to as Shaheed-i-Azam Sardar Udham Singh.
    • A district (Udham Singh Nagar) of Uttarakhand was named after him to pay tribute in October 1995 by the Mayawati government.

  • Madal Lal Dhingra:
    • Madan Lal Dhingra was the first Indian revolutionary to be hanged at a British prison in 1909.
    • The other one was Sardar Udham Singh who faced the gallows on British soil on 31 July 1940.
    • Dhingra’s final statement entitled “Challenge” focused upon his martyrdom for his country.
    • He justified violence as a means to achieve freedom of India from the tyranny of British rule.
    • He was convinced and confident that militant nationalism was the only way to attain freedom from the violent shackles of colonialism.
  • ​M.P.T.Acharya:
    • Mandayam Parthasarathi Tirumal Acharya was an Indian nationalist, communist and ⁣anarchist who was among the founding members of the Communist Party of India.⁣
    • He soon joined the Indian House with V.D Savarkar, Madan Lal Dhingra and other Indian nationalists.
    • He helped produce nationalist pamphlets and publications including The Indian Sociologist, Bande Mataram and Talvar.
    • When in 1909 Dhingra assassinated Sir William Hutt Curzon Wyllie the Indian House soon disintegrated.⁣
  • V.D.Savarkar:
    • Founded a secret society called Abhinav Bharat Society.
    • Went to the United Kingdom and was involved with organizations such as India House and the Free India Society.
    • Involved in the formation of Hindu Mahasabha.
    • He was the president of Hindu Mahasabha from 1937 to 1943.
    • Savarkar wrote a book titled ‘The History of the War of Indian Independence’ in which he wrote about the guerilla warfare tricks used in the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny.
    • He also wrote the book ‘Hindutva: who is Hindu?’.
